I don't see that in the UK people who don't work get money thrown at them. Having been used to a wage I would really struggle on benefits.
But I do see people on benefits with an excellent standard of living - do they have a secret income I ask myself. There does seem to be a poverty trap whereby SOME people who do work seem no better off than SOME who don't.
On the other hand there are people who make it work for them... for instance what's this business about working 16 hours and if you work more it affects benefits/tax/working tax credits or whatever?
I remember being unemployed and wandering round the shops just before Christmas desperately hoping to hear someone say they needed staff, and even one shift would have helped my self-esteem. I remember at that time being accused of having "opted out" when I was really desperate for any kind of work. Indeed I moved 300 miles for my first job.
So don't make assumptions. Some people milk the system, others are desperately trying to hold on to some self-esteem. I've been there.

You are wrong (or grossly exaggerated). The aims of the social security system are sensible (though the implementation is not perfect).

People who do not work are forced to try to find some by the system and given some urgency and desparation after a while when the benefits start to expire. The system does not reward permanent non-working. If you don't believe it, then why don't you give it a try?

If you oppose having benefits at all, then you would be happy in a world FULL of homelessness, suicide, violent and desperate crime, and extreme poverty, where one criminal incident could wreck your life in one minute no matter how well off you are before it.

And if income earners are not to pay tax, who will pay for maintaining our infrastructure and waste removal then?

Yes it is OK criticising the poor people of this land, but most of the Brits have worked in the past too, maybe some are ill to work and maybe some have been made redundant from their jobs like I was. Not everyone are scroungers. Look at the Immigrants and Asylum Seekers walking into the UK and having everything put on a plate for them and laughing at us BRITS. WHY. My late father worked all his life and when he was diagnosed of having cancer he could not get a penny from this Government, and when he only had 6 weeks left of his life they wrote to him telling him he was entitled to Attendance Allowance. My mother told them where to stick it. He had served in ww2 and from a young lad he has never had a dime from the state. So don't believe what you read or hear. There are genuine people on benefits of no fault of their own.

You cannot and will not win this argument there is all ways going to be some dogooding **** who will argue with you. I know what you are saying your not talking about legitimate cases. Its the free loading career poncing gits and we all know one or two. We work to keep these people maybe £57.00 + rent + milk + everything else We all have the same opportunities in life but recent governments have made it two easy for some people to take the PxSS I say abolish this welfare state and get a system in place that benefits those who really need help and maybe we wouldn't pay so much TAX so we wouldn't be looking for help our selves.

And where do you get this idea that people who dont work get money thrown at them - DONT believe what you read in the papers. The average jobseeker gets £57.00 a week and thats it - hardly enough for luxuries is it ??????? I realise there are some who are not entitled continue claiming and the immigrants annoy me when they get benefits for nothing but please dont tar everyone with the same brush - some have paid into the system for years to get that £57.00 a week - the guy next door to me had to grovel for it after he had a heart attack and that was all he got for him, his food/clothes/bills everything. xx

first of all let me clarify a few things...first off is there is 2 different types of social security benefits u can get if ur unable to work...ssi payments r for the disabled person that has never worked n is financed with taxpayers money...ssdi is for ppl who was working n have become unable to work..there r financed by what they have paid into social security...so u need to know the difference before u jump to conclusions.our government will help anyone that needs help...God forbid if something happens to you n u have to go on disability...

Just a comment on Starlet ... and others ..,. the average jobseeker gets rent and council tax paid in the form of housing benefit and council tax benefit. I know you never see the money but it does count as 'getting' the money ... don't you think so?
