a jpeg is a type of picture/image.

most photographs you see on a pc will be in jepg format as it is the standard format.

the jpeg format is compressed so it generally offers quite a low quality image if used for photographs but is perfectly suiatbel for web pages as the small compressed size loads faster when people view the page.

A jpeg will be in the following format:
the file name will be first then it will end in either .jpg or .jpeg

eg

my_pic.jpg

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. The group was organized in 1986, and issued the standard in 1992. This was actually not approved until 1994.

The JPEG standard compresses images to save space on disk. The problem is it's lossy compression, so you don't get a "perfect" picture.

It is the most widely used format for images on the Worlwide Web for images. GIF and PNG are not used for this as GIF is limited to 256 colors, and PNG files are MUCH bigger, making JPEG the best middle-ground.

A 'jpeg' is a file type developed by the 'joint photographers expert group' to give some compression on photographic images when stored so as to take up less space on your media drive or card. Before this files such as Tiff or Raw would take up much more space and be difficult to send over wire or store on removable cards.
Quite simply it's now almost a generic computer term for photos stored digitally.

It's an image format and you can get others. I would say Jpg, Gif and PNG are the main ones. :)
