I just gave him some, a teaspoon mixed into his 5 ounce bottle. Should this be done every feeding, once per day. Should I give it to him with a spoon? He is four months old. His pediatrician says he is okay with it.

I would give it to him with a spoon instead of mixing it in with his formula. Start with one teaspoon of cereal and 3-4 teaspoons of formula. I know its gonna be watery but its best for him to start that way he can get used to it and swallowing it. Start with just pm feedings once a day. Do the one teaspoon cereal / 3-4 teaspoons formula until you see that he is able to swallow it good (maybe a couple days) then go to one teasppon cereal / 2 teaspoons and so on. You can then start adding more cereal. Only feed it to him in the evening once a day. At about 5 months, I would start feeding him once in the am and once in the evening if you think he needs it. Use the directions on the box: they are helpful too. Also, you can try putting a little on you finger and putting it on his lips instead of his mouth at first. Feed him the cereal after his bottle: this makes sure he is getting enough formula which is more important at his age. Good Luck.

Since he is 4 months old you are probably better off just using a spoon. Mix it up a tish on the runny side and spoon feed him AFTER you give him a bottle (give him a couple ounces less than usual) then spoon feed him the cereal until he is done. He will turn his head, spit it out, act disinterested, when he is full. This will take a few times for him to get used to, but in a couple of feedings he'll be a pro :)Start by just feeding him once a day (I prefer to do it in the evening) then move up a feeding after about a month. By 8 months he should be having 3 small "meals" a day.

Most pediatricians say to not mix it into a bottle, read some baby books you will see this to. They are ready for it when they have head control and can use the swallow thicker foods. My baby just turned 5 months, I started the rice cereal just over a month ago, I started with a few 3-6 baby spoons once a day . I gave it to her at night so her belly would be full for the night and she would sleep longer.

I hope this helps... *cheers*

It is actually best to spoon feed. If not mixed properly in the bottle it can cause them to choke. Get your camera ready when you feed him for the first time. I got the cutest pic of my son having his first bite of rice cereal and he has it all over his mouth.

i started my son on cereal when he was 5 mos old. I fed him 3x's a day, and as much as he wanted to eat in a sitting. Start out with soupy and gradually make it thicker. IT's up to you how much you want to feed him. Don't put it iin a bottle, you use different swallowing techniques for solids and liquids. He could choke. no matter how little you put in the bottle.

it all depends on the baby. if he takes to it and doesn't fuss, then it should be ok. also, make sure to closely monitor his growth. both length and weight. if it increases like it's supposed to, then there really shouldn't be a problem. but i can tell you now that your pediatrician will give you grief about it, stating that the baby needs as many calories as possible now, and giving him rice will rob him of that. well... that's not always the case. i was given rice cereal when i was just over 2 hours old. and now, i'm 6'1", and close to 285!! imagine if i had had all those calories i was "robbed" of!!

if he's four months old, he's not a newborn. thankfullly! i was answering this question fearful that someone was trying to feed a newborn solids. I suppose since your child is bottlefed, the rules may be different. my kids (4 of them) were all breastfed and didn't need solids til they were 6 months old. you need to consult with a physician or nurse. if you can't afford one, get in touch with Mothercraft and they will let you know what resources are available in your community. best of luck

It depends on what your goal is with him. Feed him until he's done (he should let you know), and do it however often and using whichever method you like. If your baby is breastfed and you want to continue, then probably not much more than once or twice per day if at all.

All "solids" should be given with a spoon. Only formula and other liquids should go in a bottle.
