When his career is over, the numbers will show he will be. Winning the superbowl this year will be a huge step in solidifying that.
So, yes he is the best now, and when all is said and done he will be considered the best ever like his coach already thinks he is.

Depends on what you mean by "best". Some people who have obviously never played a down of football in thier lives would say no, because he hasn't had a year with ridiculously high rushing yards (though he's been consistantly great). But being a great running back isn't just about running the ball, which if you look at L.T.'s career instead of just this year you'd see that he is on a better rushing pace than even Sanders was at this point. The thing that makes L.T. great is that he is a weapon in all aspects of the game. He has the best hands of any runningback in the league, he is a great blocker (even played fullback in high school), and no one in history has been better at the option pass, not even Payton. The fact that he set the TD record this year is just icing on the cake, in my opinion he was already on pace to become the greatest ever. Besides if Schottenheimer says he is, who are we to argue.

the best pure runner ever was barry sanders, hands down. a few years ago the sporting news polled a bunch of defensive stars from the 80s and 90s, and barry received every single vote as the #1 most dangerous opponent they went up against. (not even joe montana or jerry rice or eric dickerson or sweetness received a vote above barry.)

However, LT will have the best career ever with another season like this one. the choice will probably boil down to pure ability (Barry) vs. achievement (LT)

Jim Brown is the easy choice for number one. His performance was excellent, no matter what stat you look at; overall touchdowns & yards, average rush per carry, % of touchdowns per carry, yards per game. Yards per season is decieving, since he started his career with 12, then 14 game seasons, but never had the benefit of 16 game seasons, but even so,his yards per season was outstanding. I also look at whether a back was target number one for defenses. For instance, does the team also have a world class qb or receiver to split up their time with? For the Browns (as it was with Earl Campbell's Oilers) he was the only real target, yet he still achieved at a high level. There is also the toughness issue. Brown was never afraid to dish out punishment. He was a good pass catcher, although I wouldn;t call him great at that. Regarding other areas, such as blocking on pass plays,I don't really know how he would stack up.

your kidding right LT does not even have a ring on his finger

barry sanders had 2,053 rushing yards in 1997 and never won a superbowl but i think he is a better Running back then LT.

i can go on naming them but just a tuchdown record does not make the player the "best" it takes a superbowl to be the best.

The best running back ever is the very first guy who got the crap knocked out of him running with only a leather helmet on his head and got back up thinking to himself this is fun and did it again. Every running back since has just followed his lead.

Give him a few more years before he gets mentioned in the same breath as Payton, Brown, and Sanders.

He may be when his career is over, but I believe that if Barry Sanders held on a little while longer, his name would be deeper in the record books.
