William Wundt is often called the father of psychology. He lived in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He set up one of the first ever psychological laboratories at the University of Leipzig in 1875. Many of Wundt's students went on to become prominent psychologists. Wundt was a proponent of introspection as a method of study. He believed that no one could understand an experience better than the person having that experience. Wundt's greatest and most enduring contribution to psychology was probably his bringing of the experimental method to the study of the mind. Even though much of his work has since been criticized, he was one of the first, if not THE first to apply the rigours of science to psychological study and one of the first to insist on the rigorous training of his students.
