I work for Time Warner Cable, and we never sell our equipment. I DO see quite a few boxes bought on eBay, though. They're often stolen, and always absolutely useless.

You see, unless they're rented from us, they aren't in our regional computers. If they're not in our computers, they can't be on your account. If they're not on your account, the anti-theft code kicks in after two weeks and "bricks up" the box, giving you a black screen until it gets an unbricking signal from our office. But as it's not on your account, we won't do that.
If you have Time Warner, just forget it. We'll refuse you service. If you have another provider, call them first and see.

Many of these eBay boxes have had their serial numbers and barcodes removed (often to hide the evidence that the converters are stolen), so even if we wanted to put it on your account, we couldn't.

Besides, we see an amazing amount of equipment that goes bad, even within the first six months. Heck, a lightning strike three blocks away could do it. If you rent from your cable provider, we can take your defective equipment, give you a new converter, then have the manufacturer repair the first one without you even missing an episode of your favorite show. If you buy a converter and it goes bad, you either have to buy another one or FedEx your broken equipment to Pioneer and wait three to six months for an expensive repair.

You could buy a cable box, but without getting service and your cable company to let it receive a the encrypted signals it will be worthless. Unless you think the cable box they would give you is crap I would rent one. Cable boxes are really expensive if you buy them.

You can get stuff like that on eBay...I don't remember what they're called. A co-worker asked me to order one and he loves his.
Not that I condone that, (I pay for my cable) but you CAN get it from there.
