Every year my sisters and I get together with our mother and do the "pulling of names" and buy gifts for everyones children.Well this year I would just like to have a simple gathering without all the have too's. Am I wrong to want this? Isn't the meaning twisted and entertwined with how one stores sales are up or down?

If this is a family tradition, it will be hard for others to accept your idea. People need traditions around holidays to keep it a happy time for them.

I do see your point about the commercialism and things, but if you love your family, you aren't doing it for the store.... but for them.

You might discuss it with them and see if others also feel that way, but don't insist on it being your way. If most of the others want to continue the tradition... I'd go with it.

Best Wishes,

Sue

Do you want a simple gathering with the family, or with other people? If with family, but you want it simple, take your name out of the drawings, but enjoy the fellowship. It is only once a year, and believe me, when everyone is dead/gone, you'll want it again. You are not wrong to want anything, that is the blessing of being an adult. you can choose what you want, when you want it. But if others want to have the gathering, they also have that right, and you have to decide where you fit in, or how to make your contribution simplier.
Yes, the meaning of Christmas is twisted by the stores, but that is what they do..make money, or try to. None of us need to participate, again down to choices. We can look around and find fault, or just make better choices with our own money, time and life. Have a great Christmas, your way, and enjoy the meaning behind it all. Good luck.

Compromise! Continue to participate in the name-pulling, but buy the cheapest and crappiest gifts you can find, then defend your actions in the name of "Christmas is too commercialized and all you're doing is teaching our children to want more and more expensive things instead of focusing on what REALLY matters in life."

They'll make you do it again next year because they'll suspect you only did that to get out of this tradition. Do the same thing again next year. In fact, write down your speech so you can deliver it exactly the same way two years in a row.

You should be off the hook for Christmas 2008.

Yes, you are right Christmas is so commercialized it's not even funny! This is the time of year that so many people get depressed because of the pressure "to buy" for friends & family. I would try to find meaningful inexpensive gifts for everyone. I would also let them know that you are not in a position to go all out this year. Make the most of it. The most important thing is to spend quality time with your family. This is what makes it all worth it!

You are not wrong to want this, but you are also wrong about it being twisted. If you feel that you just want to celebrate Christmas the way you want, becuase you feel it would be more real, then that is fine. Explain to your family what you want; but don't force them to stop there tradition becuase of what you want.

Most people love giving gifts to their loved ones, we love to see their facial expression when they open the gift that we gave them. There happiness is a gift in and of itself. It all depends on how you look at it. If you look at gift giving as commericialized then you are missing out on the joy that giving can be.

you are not wrong. Granted, it seems as if there is a tradition there, but you have your own family. There is nothing wrong with that. Maybe this year you could suggest that everybody make food, like a dessert or something modest like that.

No, you are not wrong. It is way to commercialized. Have a white elephant or ornament exchange instead.
