Yes, the birth of Jesus is celebrated wherever Christians worship, including Russia. However, not all countries or Christian denominations celebrate Christmas on the same day, or with the same customs.

The article on Christmas in Wikipedia says "In Russia, Grandfather Frost brings presents on New Year's Eve, and these are opened on the same night. However, after the Russian Revolution, Christmas celebration was banned in that country from 1917 until 1992."

"Some Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 of the Julian calendar. These dates are merely traditional and neither is thought to be the actual birthdate of Jesus."

The rest of the article is very interesting, too, and explains Christmas history, customs, and traditions from all over the globe.

Yes we have Christmas(7 january according to our church). But most part of people do not celebrate it. Russians celebrate New Year (31 dec-1 jan) and it is the brightest holiday with Christmas tree, Ded Moroz(aka Grandfather Frost, Santa Claus) and his granddaughter Snegurochka(in english something like Snowgirlie, Snowmaiden). They come to homes and make presents. Lately russian government declared: days from 1 january to 7 january are holidays. So these days are national merry-making and hard-drinking.

Yes - there are a lot of Christians in Russia. While the Communists were in power though, they all went underground.

Christmas is everywhere, man. On every continent and in every culture (except maybe places like New Guinea and the Amazon rainforest where western culture is unheard of). God is not the center of Christmas everywhere, either...it is just a holiday to some.

Yes! I want to know if the eskimos celebrate Christmas in their igloos? Do they get excited on Christmas morning when they look out of the window and see that it has been snowing?
