Japan isolated itself mainly to prevent the Christianity from coming into Japan. The Edo govt thought that Christianity would eventually destabilize the nation. Isolationism helped Japan to maintain its independence. In fact, most of the Asian nations were colonized by the western countries.

However, only Netherlands commercial ships were allowed to visit Japan. Unlike Spain and Portugal, Netherlands promised not to preach Christianity in Japan. Through Netherlands, Japan was getting information about the west even during the isolation years.

Most of the typical Japanese culture known to the world today were formed during the isolation period which lasted as long as 260 years.

When the U.S. battle ships suddenly appeared off the coast of Tokyo (Edo) in 1853, and Commodore Perry forced Japan to open its window, the isolationism came to and end. The U.S.-Japan Friendship Treaty was signed in 1854.

Prior to that, China was defeated by the Great Britain in 1842. The Edo govt was aware that Japan may be the next target by the western colonial powers. When Commodore Perry came, the Edo govt knew it would be wiser to open the country rather than being colonized.

In a way it was forced to.
After cutting the heads off of any foreigner who came ashore, one fleet of ships started to send cannons balls into the harbor. Because of this Japan realized that they were missing out on what was happening in the other parts of the world, and decided to better themselves. At that point in time they were a bunch of tribes fighting between themselves (samurai, warlords etc). Now they are a different kind of warriors, the Salary-man Warrior.
