Attack one area at a time and give yourself a time limit. If you're going to clean your bedroom, start with the closet or under the bed not the entire room or you'll be discouraged. Give yourself an hour or so. You must go through everything in that time and make a decision on what stays and what goes.
Chances are that you've got too much stuff. If that's the case, give yourself a limit there too. Only let yourself keep half of your stuff. If you need to, have a friend (preferably one who tends to be tidy) help you and on any items you can't decide to keep, give your friend the final say.

First of all, you need to get a friend to help you out with sorting out the clutter in your house. You can't do this all by yourself because after and hour or two, after you've laid everything out in stacks and piles, you'll feel the weight of sorting them out, and instead will just haphazardly pile them up into one corner. That's not the way to do it... and so you'll need someone to help you out.
The key to controlling clutter is to get rid of really old stuff, stuff which you'll never need again or almost never use. A good way of deciding what stuff to keep and what stuff to give/throw away is to think back "When was the last time I used this set of saucers?" I've seen a "How to clean your attic" programme on tv some years back, and I remember the tips to keeping a neat attic is to get rid of the stuff you haven't used over the past 1 year... and I think the same rule can be applied here.
I can share my personal experience with you. I used to collect piles and piles of health magazines, books and clothes. I had over a thousand magazines and books combined and loads of shirts, briefs and swimtrunks... I just had to get rid of the ones I almost never use anymore whether branded ones or not. Now I don't collect any sort of stuff anymore, I just buy what is necessary due to my tendency of collecting stuff... and you should try to do the same too, by getting rid of the stuff you don't use and hardly use.

One thing that will help long term is 10 minutes a day before bedtime with some music on. Do essentials - put clothes in cupboard and file papers and do the dishes. Keep it up and spend 1 hour over weekend for excess clutter.

Get rid of things you do not use. When shopping ask yourself why you are going to buy what you are thinking of buying. More times than not you won't when you think of the clutter you are unhappy with. That is what I do. Start tossing out the stuff you don't use, NOW. Good Luck. I just went through the same thing.

Ok this is what you do:
Start going through things have three piles (just like on those tv shows) one for garbage, one for donation and one to keep. Try to recylce what you can (magazines and old papers and newspapers.) Purchase a shredder for old documents (anything with your name on it) Get rid of all clothing that you have not worn in a years time and donate them. Get rid off all knick knacks that you do not love. If something is packed away take it out if theres no room for it and you forgot you even had it get rid of it. So the only true way to declutter is to get rid of things. Good Luck!
