Hi... I am thinking of a 30 gal. tank for Christmas... I want fancy goldfish, but people say they are hard to keep... So I have a few questions.

1. How hard (on a scale of 1-10, 1 being as easy as a betta and 10 as hard as hard as a real cat shark or cuttlefish or something for experts only) are fancy goldfish to keep? I don't mean the hardy common types but the fancy types...

2. What are the easiest and hardest types to keep? And I mean which are more susceptible to diseases and which aren't. And tell me all of the diseases which one is susceptible to...

3. Am I asking for too much? Well, I need the information...

4. Anything else you need to tell me?

And DO NOT say "Goldfish are the hardiest fish out there! You don't need all of this information! Just put one in a bowl!" That tells me you know nothing about fish.

30 gallons is pretty small for more than 1, maybe 2, fancy goldfish. Goldfish produce a loooot of waste, and the ammonia and nitrites build up fast. I do suggest you go tropical, because you could have a nice cominbation of fish.
Say, a school of neon tetras, a dwarf gourami, and 3 red platies? Just for example.

If you must go with goldfish, get some fancies (I am partial to Black Moors, they're pretty hardy and nicely coloured). Like all fish, they are easy to keep if their requirements are met. Gold fish are the most abused fish out there because people think they can keep them in bowls and not clean the water. If you keep them in proper sized tanks, clean the water weekly, and feed quality foods, there is no reason it shouldn't be a breeze to keep them. If you dont' clean the water and get too many, you will see your fish die.

If you want more info, research :) Google has lots of great info! Join a fish forum (like fishforums.com) and ask specific questions.

Good luck :)

Hi Ive had a 33 gallon tank with most of the same healthy fish I started with, for 3 1/2 yrs now. I have one large goldfish that has been alive for 6 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!-HUGE (don't know if he is fancy) A friend gave him to me when he was 3.

And oddly enough the rest are "tropical" (aka warm water fish). The heartiest ones are tiger barbs, kissing fish, and the sucker fish
They all get Ick/parasites now and then especially if you bring home some new fish and they spread it to your others if this happens its easily treated with tablets you drop in the water.

I suggest you don't buy your fish at a place called wally world (if you know what I mean) b/c there fish tend to be sickly. Just so ya know. A reputable pet shop would be your best bet.

I keep my tank at a comfy 77-a happy medium between warm and cold.

GOldfish are easy to keep just use practical sense
keep the tank clean the fish fed but not overfed use filtration ...you can use a filter bigger then the tank you have ....say the flter is rated for 30 gallon tank you can use one rated for say 40 gallons just don't get extreme.
Just beware when using live plants since goldfish will or may eat them but in all cases of keeping fish get a book on them and thier species and learn what they like and don't like and by all means don't overcrowd the tank it means certain death and disease
OH and those small bowels they have for fish they should be outlawed would you put a kid in a small box to live in?
OH a rule to live by the bigger the tank the less problems you will have so don't overcrowd your tank

All fish are the same level. I recommend tropical fish, get a zebra danio. and put all your chemicals blah blah blah so on so forth. See how well your danio is doing and if is doing fine, get more fish after 2 weeks. After you have about 15 fish in the tank. You can actually put GOLDFISH in your TROPICAL tank. Goldfish can tolerate water conditions.
Zebra Danio- Really strong, easy to keep, hard to get diseases
ANY other fish are easy to keep once you established your tanks.
