two nights ago (saturday the 9) i was at a party dancing barefoot and this girl STOMPED on my foot with her heels on!!! I was limping for a while but then i just decided to forget about it, even though it still hurt. My toe is now, two days later, black and blue and purple all over and its swollen and there is this weird indent/bump in it (in two different spots) and i just put ice on it. How do i know if it really is broken/ fractured? If it is, will i have to use a splint? thanks!

If you cannot bend your toes there is a good chance it is broken; however the swelling me be preventing you from moving it. There is not much you can do even if your toe is broken. A splint will not really help. Try to stay off the foot. If you have to borrow some crutches I would do that.

I hope you get better soon.

It could be broken but those tiny bones heal really fast.
I must have broken a toe atleast 4 times in my life.

It doesn't require a splint. Just don't put all your weight on it far awhile. You can walk normally, as soon as it stops hurting, when you apply your weight on it.

From your description, you probably just have a slight fracture. Those bones are hard to break because they are so short and thick for their length.
If it was a bad break you would be in a lot more pain and would have seen a doctor last night probably.
If the swelling is twice the size of your toe, yes it's broken. By how much? It is probably slight.

There is nothing the doctor can do. Just favor it for awhile.

I'm sure that's what he would say.

Take it from my own personal experience with fractured toes.

If it is broken, more than likely you won't need a splint. They will only tell you to stay off of it.

I would say it's not broken, but severely bruised, except that you said you had two indents. Because of this, I would just go in and have them look at it.

Even if its broken, 90% of the time they don't do anything for it anyway, except wrap it (wrap the broken one individually and then tape/wrap it to the next toe so that the broken toe is supported)....

The only way to know for sure is to get an X-ray. The doctors will charge you hundreds of dollars to find out. But in the end they'll just tell you to tape it to the toe next to it and let it heal. Theirs not much that can be done for a broken toe or finger. Ice it and save your money.

That sucks, broken toes hurt like h*ll!!! The only way to find out if it's broken is to have it x-rayed, but even if they can see it broken all they will do is splint it. I broke my toe while stubbing it, lol, my doctor told me a popsicle stick will do the trick for a splint, worked like a charm for me! Good Luck and Happy Healing

the only way to really konw is to get an xray - but it sounds broken - similar thing with similar results happened to me...a doctor will most likely tape it up next to your other toes - there aren't too many things they can do. I don't konw about a splint, but they won't put on a cast. Like I said - probably just tape.

It sounds like it's broken, best thing is to see a doctor. If you don't want to see one, or in addition to his treatment if he doesn't bandage it, see if you can get your hands on some comfrey root. Comfrey is very good for bruises & small breaks. They used to use it on all broken bones but I wouldn't mess with broken legs or arms myself, LOL! I've used it on toes and fingers though, with good results.
Shred the root, put some cold water on it and let it sit for a few hours, then when it gets slimy take some small pieces of tissue paper or gauze, drench them and put them on the bruised or broken toe. It'll stick and stiffen when it dries, so it will give a little support although it isn't as strong as a modern plaster cast. As always when bandaging something, don't wrap too tightly!

if you are worried about it go see a doctor. get an xray. however if it is broken there really isnt any thing they can do to make it better. the most they could do if its not a serious break is buddy tape it to another toe. if its a serious break and it wont heal correctly on its own surgery is the answer although that more than likely wont be the case. while you are in pain wear tight fitting shoes to prevent to much movement in the toes

it might be broken. usually you can tell. if its broken, you cant feel it in certain spots if you touch it. you should go get it checked out. and for the splint question, if its broken they might have to use a splint. for how long depends on if its fractured or broken. go get it checked out, the doctor can give you more info. the sooner you get it checked out the less pain you'll be in and the sooner it will heel! good luck!!!

the only way to know for sure is to have it xrayed but I wouldn't bother if i were you. You can't put a toe in a cast. All the Dr. will do is tape it up with a splint to the toe next to it and wait till it heals. Just take soem pain killers and for god's sake PUT SOME DAMN SHOES ON GIRL ;)
