the earth rotates on its axis at a rate of 1 rotation per 24 hours. since the earth is a sphere, only part of it can face the sun at any time. the other parts are facing darkness.

you get night when your side of the earth is rotated such that it doesnt face the sun. you get day when you are rotated in such a way that your side is facing the sun.
