I am due in April. The baby's father doesn't want anything to do with the baby. I wanted to give the baby my maiden name since I was married but didn't change my last name back. Now that I have this baby coming I really don't want to give it my ex-husbands last name. Can I give it my maiden name, even though that is not my name any more??

You can put anything on the baby's birth certificate that you want! so yes, you can give it your maiden name

yes you may do so . you may for the most do this with out any troubles at all .
you write that the father does not want anything to do with the baby . that is both sad and i think evil .
the fact that you are not going to put the fathers as the last name of the child may play a small part in legal matter latter on however so long as you list this man as the father on the papers then there is really no difference.
i hope and pray that you the father and the child soon come to see that you are a family and that each of you is linked to one another in such a way that only God could dissolve .

You can definately name it your maiden name. In fact, the law says you can name your baby just about anything...a new last name altogether. But I agree with you....no point in taking a last name, esp. if it's from a guy who wants no part and you can change your last name back to your maiden name on your divorce decree. If you don't change it now (the baby's name), you'll have to go to court to change it later....and may need his permission to do so. Easier to do on the original birth certificate:) Good luck!

Don't even put him on the birth certificate if he's not around.

In the United States, you can call the baby anything you want with some tiny tiny exceptions. For instance, some states require names to be more than 1 letter of the alphabet, so no symbols or numbers.

The last name can generally be anything you want.

Of course. You could give your baby any last name in the world & it wouldn't matter as long as it's on the birth certificate

You can give your baby whatever name you want: first middle and last. I would look into changing your last name back. My daughter has a different last name than me and it was confusing to her and her teachers etc. when she was younger. Congrats on your pregnancy.

you can name your child any surname although to make things easier for yourself in the future ,i would take my maiden name back myself. if you get remarried it is easier to change the childs nameto your husbands name if thats what your child wants my daughter did and it was a nightmare due to the fact that we had to provide a lot of extra court documents to do so.

Go to a local hospital and ask for the birth registration form, it will explain what is and is not allowed as a last name where you live.
