My 11th grader took the PSAT and we got the report today. She scored:

Critical Reading: 58, 81st percentile
Math: 57, 74th percentile
Writing Skills: 52, 70th percentile

Selection Index: 167
Percentile: 78th

She came home happy, but I suspect from a search of the internet that this actually is not very good.

She attends a public school that is actually not that great. She is currently taking AP US History, Honors English, Physics, Algebra, Spanish, Band, and Chorus and is basically swamped keeping up with this work, so she barely prepared for this test.

Can anyone give me an honest opinion of this?

I don't want to sound discouraging, but those scores are very average ones. Actually her Math score is quite alright because American students are not too good in the subject (saw an episode on "Oprah" which stated that America's ranked 24th in the world in Math).

Heres something you didnt expect

These tests mean nothing. The PSAT and SAT are two of the most obscure and redicculous tests i have ever heard of. I personally took the PSAT this year as well, and i only received a 185. However, i took an IQ test at my school as well, showing my IQ to be about 143, nationally ranked as a genius. I also hold a card in Mensa, a nationally recognized organization for people with intelligence in the top two percent of the world. What im getting at is, DO NOT worry about these scores. If they represent anything, it is merely how poorly the school district's curriculum is.

She is NOT average, or at least she is well above the median. The percentile means that many people out of 100 scored lower than she did. So less than 1/4 of PSAT-takers did better than she did.

I have no idea what "selecton index" means though.

She's average. Since she is in the 78th percentile, she scored better than 78% of the juniors taking the test this year. She probably won't qualify for National Merit, but it's still decent.

I would be happy with these scores. when i took it my sophomore year i scored horrible (hopefully i did better this year) but i wouldnt worry about it. that test is kinda tricky and colleges DO NOT look at it. it will harm her in no way. since its a psat, now she knows what to focus on to do good on the sat, which is an important test! (if your going on in college)

good for her for those scores! :)

I doubt you should be so concerned about these scores. Look at the classes she is taking, doesn't that say enough? Let her be happy...she's obviously a bright kid if she is taking the courses you said she was.

Someone has to flip the bergers.

But she will still be able to vote.
