Hi, I did a little research and I have learned how important the 4'c are in a diamond ring. Now, what happens if a jewlery store does not provide a "cert" but provides an appraisal?? Should I purchase a ring from them? What should I know before I buy a ring from a jewelry store? What should I look for???

You'll get the most bling for your buck if you buy a stone from a diamond wholesaler. (You can do a web search and find several.) And just pick the setting from a jeweler. That's how we ended up with my half carat round for about $400.

Congratulations!

I'm not positive, but I think certification means the diamond didn't come from illegal or immoral trading and inhumane practices. So, I wouldn't buy a ring if that's the case and it isn't certified. However, make sure you get the ring appraised no matter what! You already know the 4 c's, so as long as the ring is certified and appraised you should be okay, but I'd take it to another store to get checked out after you buy it, too. Best advice is probably to buy from a name brand store. Tiffany's and other big companies won't cheat you, because they don't need to and they're more scrutinized by the government and investors.

Good luck and congratulations!

All jewelry stores have a 200 percent markup. The certification only is for a magnification of 10X power. No matter how impressively big their scope is, it is still only the same power as a cheap magnifying glass.

The certification only means that you can't see anything with a cheap 10X magnification.

Ask for 33 percent off from the manager. If they don't give you the discount, go to the next store.

That whole certification stuff is just a con to bring in the rubes. Either you can see flaws (bits of black carbon) with a 10X magnification or you can't. They all buy from the same wholesaler, Debeers.

The best ones I have seen w the best 4 cs were at Helzebergs jewels- Zales best quality at the local store hear was poor- so shop carefully and an appraisal does help some- as far as saying what it is worth- but does not address the 4 cs-they have great sales- and the mark up is outrageous-I would shop elsewhere-D

Before you buy an engagement ring make sure you are in love with that person. Otherwise you will waste your money :)

Anyway good luck with the ring
