I've added a new 2003 SP1 Server box to our existing domain, and plan to make it the DC. We currently run a 2000 Server environment. Here's my gameplan:
(1) Run 'adprep /forestprep', 'adprep/domainprep', then 'adprep /domainprep /gpprep' on my existing 2000 servers
(2) Run 'dcpromo' on the new 2003 server to make it a DC
(3) Migrate FSMO roles to new 2003 DC
(4) Demote existing 2000 DC using 'dcpromo'
(5) Retire the 2000 server box

Are there any steps that I'm missing? Any gotcha's to look out for?
Thanks much.

Sounds like you have a well thought out plan. My only question is why you are demoting the Win 2000 box. I mean, with only the one DC you have a single point of failure to your entire network if you lose that server. Why not run the functional level in 2000 mixed mode, the default for Server 2003 and continue to use the second box for fault tolerance?

I would co-exist them for a while to make sure the new server is holding. In the meantime, configure a secondary 2003 DC as a backup. Once you're sure it's holding, retire the 2000.

As for the sequence, looks good to me.
