The snout distinction is the key -- but in addition, if it's anywhere but Florida through east Texas, it's a crocodile. Alligators are only found in the U.S. southeast; crocodiles (and other crocodilians like the gharial and cayman) are found all over the world -- Africa, southeast Asia, India, South America, Indonesia and Australia.

Crocodiles have a more pointed snout and alligators have a more rounded snout. That is the most obvious difference.
