Marriage is not just some nice ceremony. It's a legal contract that protects children and partners. No matter how long a gay couple has been together, most of them will still be at the dubious legal state of being "girlfriends and boyfriends" of each other. In hospital rooms, if a person cannot physically or verbally express themselves (such as in a coma) only immediate family and spouses are allowed to see them. Girlfriends and boyfriends are not. This has lead to several incidences of partners dying in hospitals without their lovers by their side. Another problem faced by gay couples is custody of their children. In lesbian couples, for example, only the woman who gave birth to the child is considered their legal mother. If this woman dies, the other woman must adopt her children. This can be especially difficult for her if mean-spirited relatives try to adopt the children first. "Real family" has more court rights to children than "girlfriends" and "boyfriends" of the parent. You can imagine how traumatizing it is for the children to be whisked away from someone they consider their parent reguardless of the law. Gay couples have an even harder time, since they can't give birth to their own children, and must adopt. The closest they can get to having a "real child" is artificial insemination, and even then the "mother" can still take the child as her own. The worst happens when a gay couple attempts to adopt children. Often times, they save children who other couples don't want to adopt, like children with developpmental problems or simply those too old to get a fair shot at finding a home. However, even after getting a child, gays are still persecuted by prejudice and dubious legal battles for custody of their child. Marriage will not stop prejudice, but it will ensure that gays' children get the same rights and legal safety as straight peoples' children, and that gay partners can have the same security in marriage as their straight counterparts.

if freedom of religion is a true freedom American's have and most oposition to Gay Marriage is based in religion, then isn't it fair to say that it is unconstitutional? The right to marry is one given by the government not the bible. Your personal beliefs have nothing to do with it, you might not agree with the Jehovah's Witnesses because they don't celebrate Christmas but does that mean they should be illegal or outlawed? Of course not. The same applies to two people who love each other, if you don't agree with who they choose does that give you the right to stop the wedding and make their marriage illegal? How about blacks marrying whites, is that illegal? Not today, it is perfectly legal. Some may oppose it, but they don't make a Constitutional Ammendment to outlaw it. That would cause civil unrest and cries of discrimination. Why should it be different if 2 men want to commit to each other and be married lawfully? Think about separation of church and state then reconsider your position based on the Constitution of the United States, not your Holy Scriptures.

I'm hung up on the fact that gay people want to call it marriage. Honestly, marriage is and has always been between a man and a woman. I think they deserve the same rights and a binding contract is cool, but why can't you call it a civil union or something?! To me its like a boy who wants to join the girlscouts, why? Gay couples should have equal rights, but our culture does not have to redefine ancient concepts to make this happen. I believe most people who are not in favor of gay marriage are probably in my boat. I would vote in favor of a civil union, but I would vote against gay marriage.

I hope this helps.
