For example, if you wanted to find out how long it would take to fill the bathtub, assuming you had a steady rate of putting in water, you would use a straight line graph.
Example: You need to get 3000ml of water into a tub. You put in water at a rate of 150ml a minute. You have no water in the tub right now.
Draw a straight-line graph with a slope of 150 and going through 0. Then, see the x-value for y=3000.
You get the idea?

suppose we have 3 data points that relate the gasoline mileage to the speed of a car: Speed = 30 mph, mileage= 30 mpg; speed = 40 mph, mileage = 25 mpg; speed = 60 mph, mileage = 15 mpg. A downward-sloping line graph could be drawn between those 3 points, which would give the value of gasoline mileage for any speed between 30 mph and 60 mph. We could even "extrapolate" or extend the line graph to estimate the miles per gallon at speeds slower than 30 mph or greater than 60 mph.

The accumulative amount of money you make with a steady income (annual). For example: say you make 40,000 dollars every year for, lets say, 10 years. We already know with simple math that you will make 400,000 dollars. This is what your graph is like: your vertical line will represent dollars. Say each line or hatch mark will represent 10,000 dollars. Your horizontal line will represent years. Say each line or hatch mark represents a year. So to draw the line do this: go right one (a.k.a. one year), and go up 4 (a.k.a. 40,000 dollars). Graph a dot where the 2 lines or hatch marks will intercept. Keep graphing dots, then connect to make the line. Although I'm sure you know that already. Your line should be steep. If you keep going up 4 every time you go right one, your line should go through the interception of the lines or hatch marks "10 years and 400,000 dollars".
