No. Emergency Contraception, or EC, is a large dose of birth control hormones taken at once to prevent an egg from being released, to thicken vaginal mucas, and make the lining of the uterus inhospitable to fertilized eggs. that's what regular birth control pills do, only EC is an all-at-once deal, not a pill you take every day. it is an emergency measure and is not approved for use as regular birth control.

having a "medical" abortion (meaning one done with medications) is different. it is first taking a drug to cut off necessary hormones to the fertilized egg/fetus, and the second pill is to cause contractions and expell the fertilized egg/fetus.

EC prevents the joining of the sperm and egg, whereas the medication combo of abortion pills actually expell an existing pregnancy.

Yes, I do. At least, potentially. RU486 is taken before the woman knows if the egg has been fertilized, let alone implanted. However, its ultimate intention is to purge a fertilized egg or blastocyst from the woman's body. I cannot ethically agree with such an action. The willful destruction of human life is still the willful destruction of human life. ------------------ "Heaps of fertilized eggs naturally fail to implant. If they think preventing implantation is abortion, then their God is a helluva abortionist." Born-Again Asatruar: What god? I'm an atheist. You seem to consider a natural occurence to be equivalent to a willful action. Why? Can there be an ethical value where there is no willful intent?

It depends who you ask. I don't consider E.C. an abortifacient, because it does not terminate a pregnancy. It stops a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterus. This is quite likely to happen anyway, and a zygote at this stage of gestation is basically an undifferentiated blob of cells.

But if you believe that sperm+egg=life, then yes, e.c. is the same as an abortion.

depends on who you are talking to and their morals/personal value, some people consider simply wearing a condom or pulling out an abortion, some people consider emergency contraception an abortion, others dont. the egg is fertilized and the pill prevents the egg from impanting, so make your own decison

The only EMERGENCY contraceptive is the morning after pill and yes it would be considered an abortion, because it will eliminate a fertilized egg.

Yes life begins at conception correct? Yes! So no matter how primitive it is a human being and you are ending it's life. If it is growing in the womb and you take something into the body to poison and destroy it, that is no different than cutting it out, sucking it out,if you are causing hemorrhage and contractions to expel it as an unwanted birth. You are ending a LIFE.

If you have to ask the question you are obviously avoiding the truth that you already know. Life begins when the sperm breaks that outer cell membrane and begins to divide. It is also my opinion that life begins the moment the couple decide to make love. If you decide to have intercourse you decide to participate in the process of creating an offspring. No, it's just a higher dose of birth control pills that prevents the egg from implanting.
