The screen on a Zune is much brighter and larger but both Zune and iPods have the same resolution. Both players are fairly similar in their device interfaces but iTunes seems to be easier than the Zune Marketplace software from my experience. There's no way to tell if the Zune will overcome the iPod but at this point its doubtful with Apple's significant lead to market with their iPod line. Zune is making some big strides with their initial launch and the ever-growing line of accessories.

Ironically, the Zune's interface is much more aesthetic and visual than the text-based iPod. Also, I noticed that the Zune has already dropped $20 on Amazon.com to $230 versus the Apple iPod 30Gb still at $250. Not sure if this is just a holiday sale or a permanent price reduction.

Either way, I don't underestimate the computing abilities of a 12-year old. Most kids know far more than the vast majority of adults when it comes to computers and technology. And adults have been able to quickly pick up on how to use the Zune and iPod just fine.

I had an iPod Nano that died after 18months, now I have a Zune and an iPod Shuffle 2nd generation (for workouts). Unfortunately, the two music formats are not interchangeable without some exporting and reimporting to the other system.

Zune software only works on Windows PCs. iTunes will work on both Windows and Macs.

Before I answer this question of yours, you must know that the Zune will not work on a Mac, only on a PC. Now to answer your question on which one is better: http://money.cnn.com/popups/2006/fortune/zune/index.html
I hope this helped.

Definitely an iPod. The iPod nano in particular. Although the iPod shuffle is smaller and cheaper.
