Ona camping trip a wooden box is to be used as an outdoor refrigerator. How would you suggest painting the exterior or the box to minimize absorption of visible electromagnetic radiation? Explain.

Paint it white.

Black and dark colors absorb more light than do lighter colors. So the best thing to do is to paint it a light tan (it will hide the dirt better). Ideally, you would want to paint it white to absorb the least amount of radiation as possible.

On the electromagnetic spectrum the radiation that has a shorter wavelength has more energy in it and when it hits and object then it transfers a lot of that energy into the object as heat. Infrared lamps make good heat sources because we can't see a lot of the light generated to create the heating effect. These lights are so powerful that ceramic insulators have to be used the plastic would just melt. If the heat lamps were broadcasting in the visible spectrum then they would be just as blinding as powerful spotlights.

The average light bulb only turns 40% of the electricity into light the rest is waste heat. Fluorescent bulbs are much more efficient 65% and LEDs are 90% efficient, generating almost total light.

Our sun throws out radiation all across the electromagnetic spectrum from gamma radiation down to low level radio waves, so you will need to reflect as much radiation as possible not just the visible light. Since we can't see above or below the visible light spectrum we don't know what colors best reflect this radiation though.

It sounds strange that you care abput Electromagnatic radiation. However i would use any metalic paints because metalic paints would let any electromagnetic field pass thru. More over a shiny color could do a good job in reflecting heat to make your refrigerator more efficient.

White will reflect nearly all the visible spectra, thus minimizing the absorbed energy.
