I think he drank 5 ounces because he still has 3 ounces left. It will be like 8 ounces minus 3 ounces.

Well, I'm no mathematician by any stretch, but if a guy drank eight ounces of tea and had three left, he had to start with eleven ounces. Simple, pure logic.
