Another option is to use an audio editor, like CoolEdit or Adobe Audition. Open the song for editing, select only the right channel (leave the left alone) and then select Transform > Invert. Then convert the song into mono using the Edit > Convert Sample Type option.

What this does is cancel out anything that is the same in both the left and right channels, as vocals usually are. Keep in mind that any instrument that is also mixed dead center will also vanish.

This technique works for most songs, though not as well with songs that have a lot of vocal reverb. In this case, the vocals are not exactly the same in the left and right speakers, so they don't cancel out perfectly. The vocals, however, will be well into the background so you could sing over them.

I have Windows Media Center Edition 2005 on my computer with the Windows Media Karoke plug-in that removes the main vocals from songs. ;-)
