Alchemy is a search to find "Philosophy Stone". It was believed that Philosophy Stone will allow you to convert dirt (or lead, or urine, or other unrelated stuff) into gold. Lead was one of the most popular ones, because lead is close to gold in its weight. It was not known to them that it is not possible to conver one chemical element into another using chemical reactions without changing its atoms. That is not in power of chemistry, but they didn't know it. Although the main goal of alchemy wasn't achieved, it was a predecessor of modern chemistry.

Alchemy was the precursor to modern chemistry. See my source for more. It's stated goal was to transform one substance into another, i.e. lead into gold. Though it never achieved this goal it was the beginnings of chemistry.
