After painting the ceiling in the living-room I discovered some kind of paper/ canvas/ cloth covering the whole ceiling and it started to bulge and didn't smooth out, even after the paint had dried.
This is a large room 25 x 15 and I think I need to change the whole paper, but do they still make it? Will it cost much and is there something else I could do instead? There's a great deal of plaster as well, so it wouldn't look good with beams. Any suggestions?

"Just rip it up an start again."

Theres only 17 different patterns of wall paper in the World.

So you'll have to find out the age of it an see if its still made.

When you say beams are you on about an older building? if so get a wire brush on the beams an get some teak oil, add dye for effect, either jacobean oak or antique oak, can gat great results.

If areas of the paper are sagging down from the ceiling, you could try cutting a cross in each bulge with a razorblade (but be careful; they are SHARP) and then fiddling some wallpaper paste into the bulge. You will have to repaint, of course, to hide the cuts, but it's worth a try, as an alternative to stripping the whole ceiling (and heaven knows what plasterwork horrors that might reveal).

Wait a few days before you panic. If the original paper wasn't stuck on very well, the water in the paint makes it stretch and bubble. When it has dried out fully, the paper will shrink and probably go back into shape.

If the bubbles won't go away, you will need to strip the ceiling and reline it. That's not as difficult as it seems, especially if you use an embossed paper.

The canvas/ cloth you refer to is probably ceiling paper. Its not unusual to find it bubbles when you decorate over it. When I have encountered this problem ( if the paper is not patterned) I make about 5 cuts away from the centre of the bulge -star shape - and this allows access to the ceiling underneath. I then apply Unibond sealer to the ceiling and paste the paper back. When its dry a skim over with Fastset, sand and emulsion - undetectable.

Get some border adhesive and a hypodermic syringe. Inject the bulges initialy with a small amount of water, enough to soften the paper(work it around the bubble) let it soak a while, so the paper is pliable. then at one end, inject with border adhesive. push the adhesive, under the paper all the way to the other end, then push most of it back and smooth it out.

From your description the paper has detached from the ceiling which means you are going to have to strip the whole lot off.
You can re-paper with Anaglypta which comes in various patterns. You can then paint over this with emulsion paint. What ever you do DONT put on Artex as it is hell to remove if you don.t like it.
