If you're running Windows XP:

Click Start
Click All Programs
Click Accessories
Click System
Click System Restore

System Restore will launch & present you with a couple options. Click "Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time"

Click Next

Click on the first date that appears in BOLD - example December 4, 2006.

Click Next twice

You should be good to go from there.

start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore
And as far as how early you can restore your PC, it all depends on everything. If any windows updates or drivers or anything in that nature has been installed then I wouldnt even restore it the day before.. It is a hit or miss and usually should be last resort.. Back up your data first. Worst that could happen is reinstall Windows..
