I would really like to see the world and maybe live abroad for a large amount of time. While I would like to encounter foreign cultures, I also think it would be cool to be able to know something familiar. I've heard stories of British expatriates in Spain. Are there any American communities abroad?

Hi Denard.

Good question, easy answer. ;)

There are American expat communities all over the world.

As far as European cities go, most of the major cities have fair numbers of American expatriates.

I personally have stayed for a year (or more) in Amsterdam, London, Barcelona and Prague (back in the "early" days of post communism backpackers).

Many smaller cities also have expatriate populations. Places like Krakow, Sofia, Thessaloniki, Siena etc.

I'd say pound for pounds, it's hard to go to any major city in Europe, and most of the mid sized ones, without finding a fair community of Americans and/or Brits.

If you're thinking Spain, I highly recommend Madrid or Barcelona. Both have their pluses & minuses. I personally prefer Barcelona, mainly because it's perfect for exploring the Med coast, has great proximity to the south of France, has a thriving cultural & nightlife and so forth.

yeah, everyone I know is American

You can try meetup.com, or American clubs, or International schools...also Toastmasters clubs tend to attract a lot of Americans.
