I have 2 children and 1 baby and have always given them massages before bedtime when they were babies and it really calmed them down and usually they slept better (as did I!) which made it a worthwhile thing to do. If you spend a while massaging the babys back (by laying them on their front) and tummy then it helps the baby bring up wind and makes them more comfortable. I found it took a few attempts before the baby actually relaxed and enjoyed the experience so persevere if your baby does not enjoy it the first few times. I used grape seed oil and olive oil and almond oil, all of which were recommended by the midwife and health visitor, and they all made my babys skin lovely and soft! Good Luck.

I qualified in Baby Massage at college and I found it really interesting.

When the mothers brought their babies in they all really enjoyed. Some had carried on until their baby was 18mths just changed the routine as they were walking/crawling.

They are so many health benefits for the baby and it help you form a closer bond to the baby.

It doesn't take long to do I used to do a 30 minute session, but a 5 minute one can also be used.

You can also use normal baby oil it works just as well, esp a lavender one as it calms the baby even more.

I really hope you give it ago.

I totally recommend infant massage. It really helped my son calm down during his teething episodes and really helped his digestion. I'm not sure on the grape seed oil, from about 1 wk to 12 wks I only used baby oil. But after that I was sure he wasn't going to be too sensitive and I started using eucalyptus oil and lavender. Massaging their feet is a great way to alleviate teething pain and rubbing a big U shape on their tummies helps to aid digestion. :)

I gave my baby his first massage with grapeseed oil at 6 weeks & he loved it. I've been doing it a couple times a week for 2 weeks now & it's great for bonding & his skin is very soft too. The grapeseed oil was recommended to me by a massage therapist who told me that it had the least chance of giving an allegic reaction & oil that is edible is best because it will likely get into their eyes and mouth.

I would not use grape seed oil unless the baby's doctor said it was OK. I used baby oil. My son was a preemie and to get him used to being touched his occupational therapist at Children's Hospital showed me how to do infant massage. It is very beneficial to babies, even if they aren't preemies.

Babies love massage, be very, very gentle. You're not actually trying to work any part of babes, just use it as super relaxing touch. Get in touch with your health visitor as there are often baby massage classes in your area in conjunction with your ante-natal group.

I massaged my baby everyday until he was about 1yr old. I used almond oil. I massaged him prior to his bath and it always calmed him.
