In the future, you can do something to protect the rest of your DVDs. At an electronics store, you can buy a pack of protectors, called "D-Skins". They are just a thin layer of plastic in the shape of a disc, with something at the edges to snap on. You can leave them on while the DVD plays. If the protector gets scratched, just take it off and replace it with a new one.

I have salvaged several scratched CDs and DVDs using car polish. Just clean the surface completely, apply the polish, let it dry, then gently buff it off with a very soft cloth. This can't overcome really deep scratches, but the day-to-day contact scratches will often fill in enough to make the disc playable.

If you have certain discs that a kid is going to handle a lot, find some of the adhesive protectors for them. I actually had one of those get so messed up the CD wouldn't play, but was able to carefully peel it off and replace it, for a lot less than a new CD would have cost.

If you go to EB Games or any store like that there is a solution you can rub onto the DVD that fills in the scratches. Let it dry, then you buff it off. Your DVD will be working just fine afterwards.

A shop that sells used video games, like Game Crazy, can polish discs. Sometimes this will fix them.

dvds aren't too expensive, and this is a prime chance to teach him to take good care of his belongings.
