We stopped and bought split firewood from some guy on the side of the road, brought it home, lit it, and it will NOT burn no matter what we do. We bought a ton, what do we do now? Are we SOL?

You have green wood - let it sit until next winter, thats all you can do.

Thats all we burn to heat our ranch...I have never heard of firewood not burning! Try using kindling stacked on top of firestarter or crumpled newspapers and on top of that put some nice DRY firewood on it. When I say dry I mean well seasoned, at least one year old if not two yers old. If what you bought was cuthis fall you are SOL until next fall!

I got taken the same way!!!! The wood is not seasoned. It has to dry out for about a year before it will burn. I bought half a cord and will stack it next to the house for use next year. Too bad. The fire starter stuff doesn't work, I tried it. Best to let it sit till next year. At least you'll and I will be ready!!!!

It sounds like you have green (wet) wood that has been freshly cut down. It's going to have to sit until next winter before you can burn it. The guy you bought it from should have told you. It sounds like he's a crook to me.

My idea is do not do it. You can't burn wood in your house if you have no means for the smoke to escape, ie. a chimney. You will smoke yourself out and quite possibly set your home on fire.

You need starter wood...little pieces of wood that light on fire easily. If you put them under the wood you bought, they will heat up the wood enough to start a fire. You can get them almost anywhere...Walmart, Target, and most super markets. Look on the isle that sells charcoal. The package will give specific directions on how to use it.

stack it up outside and let it season, it may be to wet or green yet to burn. go get some that you know is dry and see if that burns.
If it does not then check the flue to see if the fireplace is drafting.

Sounds like your wood is green? Did the guy say it was cured or not? If its green you are SOL.

Is your wood dry? Is it fresh? what are using to light it? If it is green, or wet, wait a while and it should be good in a month or so...

First, it needs to be dry. you need to start a fire with dry small peices of kindling wood and paper 1st, get a good fire going, then add the bigger peices.
