Apart from practise, practise, practise!

I'm gonna get me a good teacher, too. I know I won't be able to self-teach until later.

Also should I go for electric-acoustic or acoustic? I know I'll mainly want to do acoustic to start with, but is it worth getting the E-A for later on? Or should I just get a plain electric when I'm ready?

I would say acoustic just because, if your good on an acoustic, your 50X better on an electric. I boutght a guitar book from the "Dummies" series...which are very, very, very good books to learn from. I have an acoustic now, and im getting an electric for christmas, so i would say acoustic now, electric later

i would recomend starting on an electric guitar first... electric guitars are easier to play and you can play a wider variety of styles on an electric. build up you speed and dexterity and the strength in your fretting hand. and the acoustic will be easier to play if you have more strength in your fretting hand. acoustic guitars are not hard to play but the action on an electric would be easier for a beginner to start with. but thats just my opinion. do what ever feels comfortable to you. if you start on an acoustic and get good on acoustic, then go to an electric after. you should be able to rip it up on the electric. because electrics are easier to play.

hey.. yea i own 4 acoustics. Get a good quality guitar and why not get the acoustic-electric. If you ever want to record clear you can plug it in and get all the dynamics of it.
Go with the acoustic electric
Good luck

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMSab It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.
