Borrow a 1 from the 100s column. That's also 10 tens, so your 2 tens becomes 12 tens. Then you can subtract 5 tens from 12 tens

When I learned this back in the stone age, I'm 53, we called it 'borrow' that's what you're doing. You borrow a 100 and use it as 10 tens.

When you multiply then it's a 'carry' to the next column.

This is the real beauty of the place value number system.

subtracting 153 from 224 will be written as 224-153
first the three in the units place of153 will be subtracted from the 4 in the units place of 224 and then you move to the tens place and lastly the hundreds place in this case.
1 12 4
1 5 3
--------
0 7 1
