She's never tried it, and she'll only eat things that are cooked. I don't want to force her, but I'm attempting to get her to "broaden her culinary horizons", as it were. If she never tries it in her life, then that's her own choice, but she very well might like it!

Sushi refers to the rice. There is much sushi that is not raw fish. The vegetarian rolls are an example.

The crab found in California rolls is actually cooked and processed white fish.

Suggestions for a started order:

Egg - Cooked, slightly sweet, looks like an omlet
Crab - Cooked processed white fish
Both of the above can be found as Inari, or Maki. The Fotomaki - 'Big Roll' contains both, California rolls are good.
Shrimp - The pink type is cooked, look in the case at the counter and you can tell
Vegetarian - Cucumber/Carrot/Kampyo (pickled gourd)

Second phase
Eel - it is smoked or cooked and sometimes served warm
Salmon - Smoked
Seared Tuna - Cooked on the outside, but still red in the middle.

There are a large number of rolls that include tempura fried items in them.

Mackeral is a bit oily and is the most 'fishy' of the types. This is most typical of what people 'expect' in sushi.

DO NOT start them with:
Squid
Cuttlefish
Sea Urchin
Natto (fermented soy bean)

Try starting her off with a California roll - it has no raw fish, and the rice is on the outside so she won't be fussing about how the seaweed tastes funny. It was actually invented as a way to introduce Westerners to sushi. Gradually work her into other types of sushi (if you go to a good sushi bar, the sushi chef will probably be able to suggest good ones for her to try once she's decided that she likes the California rolls).

I am not a fan of sushi or uncooked things...but I do like going out to sushi and have slowly tried a few things. First, you can take her to a sushi place where she can get cooked things like tempura and teryaki chicken and edamame. Second, you should try to get her to start with rolls. Veggie ones don't even have fish or uncooked things to worry about. There's avocado and cucumber to start as non'threatening. Third, once she is past the veggie roll stage, then try her on california rolls - the crabmeat is cooked, not raw. If she likes tempura then go for a shrimp tempura roll - yummy! It's taken me about three years to go through this process and most recently I've tried spicy tuna rolls - which are not cooked, but haven't gone for hard core sushi or sashimi yet. But everything else I've liked!

Do some sushi hunting first by yourself... find the best, freshest sushi you can find. then go there, order a few of the easier to eat sushi to share as an appetizer.. and order something that she likes for the main meal... so that way she can ease into it... and not be overwhelmed by the idea of eating raw fish. If she still doesn't want to try it, just have it sometimes and maybe someday she will want to try it.

I never liked fish let alone sushi. One evening when out with friends, I tried a veggie sushi, then a California roll and have slowly worked into broadening my sushi eating.
I say start with non-fish then slowly add mild fish items.

reckoning on even if she will deal with the entire idea of eating raw fish- i'd opt for Maki, that's the cooked type of sushi. The California roll is a enormously universal maki, because the elements look particularly a lot less volatile to eat. And if she doesn't concepts attempting raw fish, then probally something with tuna in it.

Go to a restaurant and order grilled yellowfin tuna. While eating, point to the inside of the tuna steak. And tell her she just ate sushi. Next time, go to a Japanese restaurant and order tuna again. Tell her 100 million Japanese can't be wrong. Sushi taste like fish butter.
Delicious.

sushi is actually very yummy. I strongly encourage her to try it. doesn't taste much like fish though, but rather the other flavors it has with the rice. If she's worried about getting sick, she shouldn't worry unless she's very sickly.
