Peer pressure. The need to feel "grown up". Maybe they need to watch some people really get drunk to understand how stupid it is. My first husband was a highly functioning alcoholic who made six figures, yet still drank until his liver failed. He was only 46 when he died, and left behind a young child. Perhaps if kids saw what alcohol abuse can do, they would be more motivated to drink responsibly.

Because drinking is for adults and it's hard to find an adult that will give you booze. For the kids that can supply the booze, the other kids decide that you're popular.
In Europe, there isn't a drinking age, so there isn't any taboo attached to minors with booze. Those kids have to find something else to use as a front.
A popular person is a commodity. If the booze ran dry, they would need to have something else to offer or they would lose value in the eyes of the other kids.

Because they have no self confidence, and can't stand up to their peers, so they drink because their peers drink.
