First of all in response to Lady L, Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag.

Now, in regards to the question:

1. The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), also known as the American War of Independence, was a war between Great Britain and revolutionaries within thirteen British colonies. After military successes in 1775-76, the Americans declared their independence as the United States of America on July 4, 1776. The war was the culmination of the American Revolution, a colonial struggle to uphold traditional rights.

2. Martha Washingion opposed her husbands election as president of the newly formed United States of America, and refused to attend the inauguration (April 30, 1789) , but gracefully fulfilled her duties as the official state hostess during their two terms.
