I have had to cut down to no breastfeeding for the last week because of antibiotics. The doctor approved me breastfeeding..however within an hour each time I nursed, my son was yelling and crying and acting gassy. The doctor said it may be his reaction to the antibiotics. Well, in just a few short days my milk has gone down to a few drips..I am worried that I have lost the supply! Any suggestions?

Sigh.....most antibiotics are safe to take while nursing. There is a good chance that your doctor was probably wrong to tell you not to nurse. Did you pump while you weren't nursing in order to keep your supply up?

Does he still latch on OK?

He may be upset because he isn't getting enough milk since your supply is down. When he starts fussing after an hour, have you tried nursing to see if he calms down? You can't nurse too often. The more you nurse, the better your supply will recover.

He could be gassy from swallowing air if he isn't latching on well after not nursing for a week. Or he could be swallowing air when he gets upset and crys and yells and that causes the gas. Have you tried burping him after feeding? Massaging his belly? Gas drops? Try feeding him before he gets upset.

What antibiotics were you on and I can check for potential side effects based on what you took.

Pumping and nursing frequently are the best ways to increase your supply. Nothing else will work if the milk isn't being removed from your breasts often enough.

Fenugreek is an herbal supplement that works well for most moms. If you don't see an increase in supply within a week of increasing pumping/nursing sessions, you might consider taking 3-4 capsules of fenugreek 3x a day. Be sure to read the link below first.

If you have been on antibiotics and have started nursing again, it's possible that you and baby could both have thrush. Thrush can make baby gassy. Do you have any signs of a yeast infection from your antibiotics? Anytime either of you needs an antibiotic while nursing, it is a good idea for you to take acidopholis to prevent thrush. Get some now and take it to help get your system back in balance. Break open a capsule and sprinkle some on your finger and let baby suck on it.

Whenever you have to hold your milk you should pump to keeping your milk production at the same level. Just discard what you cannot feed to the baby.

To increase your milk production now pump and nurse more frequently until your are producing what you need. And increase your fluid intake but eliminate beverages with caffeine.

I've always heard drink beer. No I'm not a young punk and no I don't drink. Something about the beer stimulates it.
