I have a 1996 Nissan Altima, I went to get an estimate on new struts at Monroe and they told me about $2000? Does anyone know of any other options, i got 138000 miles on it. And it is in basically mint condition.

$2000 sounds kinda steep! have had them replaced once in my buick at sears and only cost about $600 try another garage I think Monroe is raking you.... I think even a dealer could do it for less.

Most struts you buy don't come with the coil spring. You don't have to get it realigned if you scribe marks around the mounting points and re-install back to the marks (most times). look for or call the MIdas type brake shops (econo franchises) they always have specials on shocks and struts) I usually don't recommend these shops but in this case they probably are cheaper and wont mess anything up.

buy some yourself and install them. very easy, if they come fully assembled. just take off the bolts on top of the strut tower, and then the two bolts sort of behind the caliper. just make sure to get good struts (not from sears, etc) and get it aligned when you're done.
