The United States is in violation of a number of international treaties regarding human rights, including repeated violations of the Geneva Conventions and the Convention Against Torture (both signed and ratified by the US). I'm certain the US has violated other laws, treaties, and agreements as well.

Were the US leaders to be tried at Nurnberg, there is little doubt they would be convicted, assuming they were to be tried to the same standards as we tried the Nazis. And I'm not just referring to the military here. Rumsfeld is facing indictment in Germany, as well as civil suits here in the US for his part in the torture scandal, as well he should.

Many will try to justify torture on the basis of "Well, it's a terrorist, so anything is acceptable!"

The pathetic part is that the people being tortured, sometimes to death, are not usually terrorists. The cab-driver in Afghanistan comes to mind, as does the former Iraqi general. Neither were terrorists. Both were tortured to death. Moreover, even if they had been terrorists, no court has convicted them, and no one has annoited the US torturers as judge, jury, and executioner, much less as petty little gods.

Those who defend torture should look inside themselves and see what they are. It isn't pretty. If it is acceptable to torture cab-drivers to death in Afghanistan, torture former generals to death in Gitmo (or wherever), then it is acceptable to torture them. For what? Who cares. Not one of them cares about the people in the various secret US prisons. Not one of them has the courage to deal with the torture as practised by the US, much less the sack to stand up and say no, not in my country, not in my name.

No one has respect for torturers. There is no moral ground upon which they stand, nor for those who support that kind of action. It is morallly wrong. It is heinous. It is a crime against humanity.

As for setting up secret torture prisons in other countries in a pathetic attempt to avoid US laws, well, how would you feel if Uzbekistan set up a secret prison in San Francisco to torture US citizens, including people you know and love? If you are OK with that, then you are a bigger monster than Saddam Hussein ever was.

Setting up illegal torture centers in other countries is wrong, it is illegal, it is immoral. Those who participated in that activity should be tried in front of the World Court at The Hague. That includes George Bush, Dick "Shoot him in the face" Cheney, Abu Gonzales, and Donald Rumsfailed.

In philosophy class, sometimes you have the opportunity to read John Rawls, an American philosopher. What we learn from Rawls is that if something is unfair, it is unjust. If it is unjust, it is wrong. If it is wrong, it is probably immoral and certainly unethical. Our laws should reflect the morality of our society at large. At this point, I'm pretty certain that they do, and I weep for my country.

No.

It seems that the "guest" there have gained weight (the gitmo 20) and are well fed. Can spout off all that mumbo jumbo they insist everyone is listening to and not hurt anyone. They should make it actually bigger. That way the women and the children, especially the children would be safer. It sickens me that the children are being hurt in such large numbers. The animals they have caged there are better off caged and out of the way. Millions of the people in the middle east are secretly happy that the people held there are there and not blowing up the local corner falafel shop or the new school the US TROOPS just built for your brothers and sisters. If the ARAB AND "PERSIAN" (whatever) MUSLIM FUNDAMENTALIST grew up and partcipated in the 21st century then maybe the Animal Shelter would not be needed. This is ONE WORLD. The MUSLIM People never had a middle ages to figure all this religious crazyness out and they are deep in it. They are about 700 years behind the times. This is ONE WORLD and we should all live in it peacefully and together as ONE. Not Muslim, Not Christian, Not Jew but as Human Beings. The Muslims just do not get it. Anyone who puts religion first and human beings second does not get it. No one is out to get them. Relax and grow up. Don't worry about GITMO but about whether or not little Abdul is going to strap on a Bomb and ruin 30 other peoples lives and families by blowing up the veggie market. There are no virgins or whatever waiting for them only the pain all must endure in name of God. Everytime I hear that someone strapped on a bomb abd blew themselves and others up, it makes me sick. Why Foucus on GITMO when you should focus on Education and the health and well being of your brothers and sisters and Mom and Dad and your friends. Why dont' you stand up and tell your Muslim Brothers and Sisters STOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!
But alas no Muslim has the balls to do that. I am telling you to STOP. I wish you would tell your cousin in the Middle east to stop and maybe he would tell his friends to Stop and so on and so on then maybe one day I could walk safely in Bagdad with my Blue Eyed Blond Haired Son and have a cup of tea and some Pita Bread and say what beautiful place this is. Maybe if enough people say Stop then there would be no need for a GITMO ever again!

I am going to start it with this post. STOP

I love gitmo, it should stay open so long as there are thugs trying to kill americans.

as for the alleged flights, we can end it all, end gitmo, and stop getting real actionable human intelligence about a shadowy terrorist organization that seeks our annhilation, and we can wait for the next 9-11.

Or we can continue protecting americans

the liberal mantra of "i would rather release 100 criminals from prison than let one innocent man be incarcerated", doesnt work in an age of terror, where a small group of men can kill thousands.

your rights are worthless, if all you are is a pile of ashes, burning in jet fuel on the 82nd floor.

Guantanamo Bay is tactically important to our security.
How are the torture camps "secret" if you know about them?

The US criticised Sadam Hussein for using torture, and criticises China too. It is the ultimate in hypocracy that the US uses similar (perhaps not as violent, but just as destructive) methods of 'interrogation'. And what valuable information have they got from it? Nobody knows.

The inhabitants there are NOT enemy combattants, because there is no defined enemy. You cannot be at war with an idea - such as terrorism. If they ARE enemy combattants (which is impossible to prove, as they have not stood any form of trial), then they are prisoners of war, and prisoners of war are entitled to a hell of a lot more than the inhabitants of Guantanamo.

Gitmo's been a good base for a long time. Why should it be shut down? Are you recommending we invade/conquer Jamaica in its place? Or did you just mean the detention facilities? in which case, why didn't you just say so?

Define torture? Can you show proof of all these tortures. Hell no they shouldn't shut down Guantanamo. Store the radicals there forever as far as I am concerned. They are enemy combatants.

I don't understand. These terrorists will do whatever it takes to destroy thousands of lives and people actually care about what happens to them when they are captured? Why should they have rights when their whole intent is to take away rights of the free civilation and make the world live in fear. This must have been provoked by Liberals.

Terrorists think it should be shut down.
But they really have a good life there. Even recliners to relax in.
