Nuts grow on trees, some are the seeds of fleshy fruits, like almonds and cashews. Peanuts are technically not nuts, but legumes like beans and peas, and they grow from blossoms above ground, but work their way underground to develop.

In my front yard is a pecan tree. Nuts grow on trees. Some people think that peanuts are nuts, but they are not. The old name for them is goober peas. They are actually a root product, just as potatoes come from roots. There is a difference, however, in potatoes and peanuts, in case you haven't noticed.

Peanuts grow underground (they are in the legume family). Pecans, cashews, walnuts, almonds, etc., are all "tree nuts."
