what you want to do is download a program that will allow you to manually move the songs from the ipod back onto the computer.

http://www.copypod.net/ this is an example, but with a little searching you can prolly find a free program that does the same thing.

Whatever you do, dont just plug it in and open iTunes, that will cause the iPod to update, and delete everything you had on it.

Ok listen if you computer is crashed and you wipe it clean not a big deal, you want a program that will pull the songs from the ipod to your computer, IPODCOPY is one you can find it on download.com, they have other ones on there if you don't like that problem for some reason but that worked for me and is very easy to use, DO NOT restore settings on your ipod until you load them back on your computer or all with be lost, this works and has for many people, this should help and have you back up in a matter of a few simple button pushes

You have iTunes right? So plug in your iPod and then if you have the latest iTunes, you can transfer purchases from iPod to computer . .. unfortunately you can't transfer songs from cds to the computer, but never mind. Just the songs on your iPod that you bought.

yah...but you can disable that from happening automatically. Go into your preferences in itunes and fool around in there for a bit before you try to plug it in
