You don't have to know the Congressman, but you do need a letter from your Congressman to apply to West Point, for example.

Unless your Congressman is a real a$$hole, they'll be more than happy to write a reccommendation for you.

Unless your father or grandfather has the Congressional Medal of Honor you are going to need a Congressman to sponsor you in order to get in West Point, The Naval Academy, The Air Force Academy, The Coast Guard Academy, or the Merchant Marine Academy. not just a letter.

First off you will have to have real good grades in High School. You will need to take all the Science and Math your school has to offer.
Second you will have to get to know and if possible work for the Congressman.
Third you will need the sponsorship of your teachers and the active support of your teachers with the congressman.
Fourth it does not hurt if your parents are big financial supporters of the Congressman.
Congressman are only alloted X number of openings in each of the Academies a year. It used to be 2 but I don't know how many it is now.

Go and meet several of your local congressmen.
Tell him your plans, and ask him to write a note for you. It will help.
But I wouldn't trust a Democrat Congressman.

Are you talking about getting admittance into School or the Military? Try to get a bit more specific.
