the gear linkages may have buckled out of place or the screws that join the linkages together may have come unfastened
therefore when u move the gearstick within the standard h position
the lever is moving but the linkage isn't moving the arm directly connected to the gear box

this is a common fault on most German cars
and since some of the connecting arms have plastic housing
the whole system could be out of place

this is a very cheap job
the linkages cost about £12
and fitting on top

it depends also on the model of BMW estate u have
is it a 325, 520 or 525

if u specify then i can give u more tips

one last thing
the clutch may be hydraulic but the gear mechanism is still the basic connecting rods

also check the hydraulic fluid in the clutch reservoir

From working at vauxhall (yeah i know but bear with me) There is a module in newer automatics that processes gearbox commands to a computer that helps the hydralic mechanism in the gearbox. If this processor is broken your car will not go into gear. i remember an 04 sintra not selecting gear once, because the hands free kit hardwired into the pre-processor corrupted the system and broke the processor under the gear selector. Non warrenty for his at a cost of £300. If all else fails and your car is auto, this could be the fault

because it somewhat is on 06 vehicle, it somewhat is totally lined by employing BMW, your broking is contractually guaranteed to come back and get the vehicle and attach it. merely by using fact it somewhat is hydrualic it does no longer mean it won't be able to fail. Hydrualic pipes can leak fluid, at which element it has a similar result as a snapped cable (i.e. no actuation).

Try pressing in the brake peddle. if that does not work you may check to make sure your break lights are coming on. on some cars the brake light switch controls the release on the shifter.

Sounds like the clutch has gone. The fact that it is hydraulic is irrelevant.
