I am in California and we have a local Mother's Club here that takes on a family at Christmas time to help them out with gifts and stuff. I would also consider contacting Toys for Tots and seeing what they have to say. I know they collect a lot of toys, but I am not sure exactly who those toys go to.

Here's the Marines Toys for Tots: http://www.toysfortots.org/
And here is one for So. Cal: http://www.toysfortots-socal.org/site/default.asp

Peace!

I have been in this predicament before. I have found several resources at hand here they are, check at your local fire department, the Department of Social Services does Toys for Tots, I don't know about in your area but here there is an adopt a family ( your family is adopted by 1 or 2 other people and they supply your family with gifts and food for Christmas),and your children's school also has services or resources at their disposal all you have to do is ask. My mother always said how will someone know you need help if you don't say anything. Good luck to you and your children and have a happy holiday season. I hope I have been some help.

If you believe you will be better off by spring, you can creatively come up with great ideas that do not have to be purchased right now. One yr i gave our kids some vouchers for Christmas. For instance, give them a handmade gift certificate saying that you will take them skating in February, a movie in March, a trip to the zoo in June, a day at the swimming pool in July, a trip to chucky Cheese for pizza and games, etc.. You get the idea I am sure. You could put them on the front of your fridge as a reminder. But when you do this be sure you follow through. Nothing is worst than empty promises made to a child. I was told all my childhood that we were "someday" going to "Rock City". I am 39 yrs old and I have still never been there. Hope this helps.

Check with the Salvation Army. They helped me when my children were small. That was 30 years ago and I make sure I donate to them every year. They gave me food and gifts for the children. I was laid off from my job and unemployment was so behind that it was 10 weeks before I got anything from them. In the meantime, I had no food or money for groceries. If it were not for their help, I don't know what I would have done. I had two sons 8 and 11 and a brand new baby girl. I was called back to work before I got an unemployment check.

I know how you feel... I'm in the same situation. I moved to this small town and there aren't many resources. I've called churches, welfare, etc. We don't have a Catholic Charities, salvation Army or anything. And I don't know anyone either. I even tried the schools. It's just too small of a town. I tried asking on craigslist which is like freecycle and received many cruel and nasty replies which made it all even worse. I was simply looking for used items in good condition that people might be will to give. I wasn't asking for new items or money. I usually give but this year it's so bad I can't even buy for my girls. I'm on SSI, no gifts yet, and no money to buy any.
I pray both of us find the answers we need for our childrens sake.
feel free to contact me if you'd just like a friend who understands. If I could help I surely would. I'm sorry all I have to offer is my friendship and understanding, I wish I could do more.
Best of luck during this holiday season.

Do you have a church home? Our church provides a lot of services for needy families at the holidays and all year really.

Being a single mom is hard. You can learn a lot of practical things at church, we do classes on parenting and finance and divorce care. See what is available near you.

Taking your childern to churhc also gives them a chance to make good friend and find good role models. While not all churches are church members are perfect, A lot of support can come from finding a church family.

BTW my best christmas was when I was 6 and we had very little money. Our parents gave us homeade gifts and we had the best day ever starting with cheaply stufffed stocking and a big breakfast.

Try a web site called freecycle.com.....it is a local 'give away and receive' site that I am in love with, as it is a way for people to help others in their own neighborhood. I am not the president, just a member.

And children just want mama's love more than anything. Remember that, and enjoy the reason for the season.

Merry Christmas

Contact your local Township office (I dont know what township you live in), or Catholic Charities or the Salvation Army. Possibly even a church (even if you're not a member).

And sometimes it's ok for kids to realize that Christmas isnt about presents and excess, but about the true reason for the season.
