As far as I know, there's nothing illegal about that.

NO,
Lying isn't always illegal, just a violation of one of the 10 commandments. So your friend is okay.

Theft is illegal and that person will be subject to the full weight of the law, even though it is not a felony.

Drug dealing is illegal, but asking for drugs is not, however the police would be very interested in this kind of behavior. If your friend called and lied saying that she was looking for drugs then that is not illegal, as long as she didn’t go through with a purchase. As part of an investigation into the theft of your phone, it is a good tactic.

The best thing to do is to file an official police report, and have your friend include her testimony and the name of the person who has your phone. Even if that person did not steal your phone possession of stolen goods is illegal. The police will happily use that threat as a lever to find the real theft.

If you were Veronica Mars then you would set up a time and place for the drug buy and make sure that the police were hiding in wait (of course that is only a TV Show). If the person on the other end suspects that they are falling into a trap then it could get dangerous setting up your own sting operation. Otherwise I say you did a good job; now let the police handle it.

Screw THAT!!! I wouldn't worry whether it is illegal that someone was stupid enough to give you the info...you need to contact the police and have them track down the phone that was stolen. They should be able to do that fairly easily as I work for a cell phone company and they should be able to track down the theif by the #'s called and the area that the phone was called from. Fairly easy to do.

'My friend impostered the theif to get a name.'

I don't really know what you mean by that, but that might be illegal if he was impersonating someone else.

nope... cops and lawyers lie alot when necessary to get to the truth and solve a crime... you are the owner of the property and were presented with a limited window of opportunity to gain information to correct an injustice.

get a list of all the numbers called while it was stolen from your service provider... then have the phone co., the cops, or google, tell you who they belong too...

they might get rid of everything before you get close... but you will still point out a thief or something shady coming from the roundabout...

or... you might get it all back !

Best wishes ... !!

Anyway you can identify a thief is good in my book. Call the police and tell them what you know.

Additional detail:
Your friend won't get in any trouble if that's what you mean. The majority of crime is committed by a few people. Get that rat-bastard before they steal again.

No that is not illegal. Impostering someone to get info is not illegal, impostering someone to get money is.

No, that's not illegal.

She means "impersonated."
It's still not illegal. Turn the names in to the police.

Its only illegal if you impersonate law enforcement. Otherwise you're off the hook.

You can go to the center of the company, and block the cell- phone...so they can't use it anymore...
