I would say that Martin Scorsese brought about Social Conscienceness, with movies like "Taxi Driver" and "Goodfellas". (2 of my favorite movies) These movies show the gritty, dark side of life, that is not always pleasant.

he has made the best movies ever it suprises me he hasnt ever won an oscar for best director...
TAXI DRIVER,GOODFELLAS,GANGS OF N.Y. those are some of the best movies but must of all he shows the real streets of new york are like(just watch taxi driver!)

Perhaps not as much with his films (although they certainly showed the brutal side of people) as much as with his film restoration efforts
