all I know is that France had to defend itself from Germany... but was there imperalism involved in France's motives?

France's goals in WWI, and every other war, was to surrender as fast as possible. The French are worthless, pretentious wimps. They should be taken over by the US or UK.

I would say that France's goal during the war was survival and beating back the invading Germans. After the war is a different story...

Revenge was France's primary motive during the treaty negotiations. Germany wasn't even allowed to attend the talks, they were just forced to sign the treaty at the end.

France's goal was to defend their allies (England, etc) from the "bad guys" (Germany, etc.). The Germans thought the war was a good excuse to invade eastern Fraance, so they got bogged down fighting over that. I wouldn't say France had many designs on expanding their empire during that war.
