Why don't you make him a homemade scrapbook for Christmas? Make the book yourself (or buy one at a craft store or website, they're fairly inexpensive) and then include pictures of things you share in common or things that remind you of him. Include little notes on why you included the things you did and their significance. Sometimes this little reminder might be just the thing to make him smile when he's away :) HGTV.com has some good ideas of homemade books that may help you get started. Good luck!

Well, it's tough to suggest something for someone you don't know, but I'm going to do my best, and if any assumptions are wrong, feel free to toss this idea out.

I'm going to go out on a limb and make the guess that your Marine spouse is male.

Well, if you're making a homemade gift for a guy, the process is going to be a little tricky (At least if he's like the average guy.)

Of course, one option is food, but that's a rather temporary gift. The average guy is a little more utilitarian and a little less sentimental than the average girl. (Although this is by no means a rule, just a trend.) Also, a lot of marines are the rough 'n tough type. If he acts that way, a 'rough & tough' gift may work better. If he's sweet whenever he comes home, he may look to you for balance, and something sweet would be better.

For the first, for just one idea, get a large number of key-rings from a hobby store. A bulk of them. Not with anything on them, but just the ring itself. From these you could run them together and make some home-made chain mail amour. Some military guys fancy themselves like the knights and soldiers, and it might be fitting. (As a note, smaller rings = better quality, but more construction time.)

For the second, something sentimental, such as picture book describe by some of the other posters, or maybe take some classes in how to do a massage, and let him know you learned how to for him, and offer to give him a massage anytime time he wants for however long you think is good. Many guys love massages, and it's a very sweet thing to do.
