YOU NEED ROTORS NOW.
When you finally hear metal - to -metal, that means that your brake pads are worn completely. At least one of them is. Now, the metal backing of the brake pad is scratching the rotor.
If you just replace the pads now, you'll do a cheap job, but the scratches now act like little razor blades. They make your NEW pads wear down even faster.
Is your car new enough to have a warning light? A small electric current passes through a small piece of metal on ONE brake pad. The current lights up a "brake" symbol onthe dash? NO? Too bad.
Get a friend to show you how to change pads and rotors. You can do it in a garage or driveway without a lift. You need a pair of pliers, maybe a small hammer, a big phillips screwdriver, some BASIC tools. Try it and be proud of yourself for HALF the price.

It could be either. When a brake pad is worn down and there is no longer brake material, the contact becomes metal to metal, thus the grinding sound. Also, some pads have a wear "alarm" on it. when it is worn down to a certain point, the metal arm will grind on the rotor indicating that it's time to change your pads. Good luck.

you need new brake pads. You are braking with metal on metal and if this has been happening for a while, your brake discs will need renewing as well. This is urgent.. get it done ASAP.

The sounds you hear are put there to remind you that it is time to have your brakes checked out. If you keep driving on them, they will scratch your rotors.
